The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) recommends that all chimneys, fireplaces, and vents be inspected at least once a year — regardless of how often you use them. This is the industry standard, and for good reason.
Even a chimney that hasn't been used all year can develop problems: animals nest inside, moisture causes masonry damage, and debris falls in from the top.
San Antonio's Unique Situation
Unlike homeowners in colder climates who use their fireplaces daily from October through April, most San Antonio residents use their fireplace occasionally — maybe 10–30 times per winter. This affects how quickly creosote builds up.
General guidelines for San Antonio:
- Occasional use (under 30 fires/year): Annual inspection, cleaning every 1–2 years
- Regular use (30–60 fires/year): Annual inspection and cleaning
- Heavy use (60+ fires/year): Inspection and cleaning every 6 months
What Happens If You Skip Chimney Cleaning?
Creosote — the dark, tar-like byproduct of burning wood — accumulates on the inside of your chimney. Stage 1 creosote is dusty and easy to remove. Stage 3 creosote is a thick, glazed coating that's extremely difficult to remove and highly flammable.
A chimney fire can reach temperatures over 2,000°F, hot enough to crack your flue liner and spread fire to your home's structure.
Signs You Need a Chimney Sweep Now

- Black, oily residue around the fireplace opening
- Strong odor from the fireplace, especially in summer
- Smoke entering the room when the fireplace is in use
- Visible animal nests or debris in the firebox
