Birds & Critters in Your Dryer Vent or Chimney: Removal & Guards

If you’re hearing scratching, chirping, or rustling from your dryer vent or chimney, the most likely cause is a bird or small animal nesting inside — and it needs to be removed and guarded against, not just ignored. Spring is peak nesting season in San Antonio, and an uncapped or damaged vent hood or chimney flue is an open invitation. Here’s what’s actually going on, why it matters, and what to do about each part of your home.

There’s a bird nest in my dryer vent — can you remove it and install a bird guard?

Yes. A bird nest in the dryer vent is one of the more common reasons a dryer starts taking longer to dry clothes or the vent hood flap won’t sit flush anymore. The nest material blocks airflow, which means heat and moisture build up inside the duct instead of venting outside — that’s both a fire risk and a moisture/mold risk. Removal means clearing the nest and all debris out of the full vent run, then installing a proper vent guard or louvered cap so it can’t happen again. A missing or broken guard is usually why the bird got in to begin with.

Could a bird or squirrel be nesting in my chimney and is it dangerous?

Yes, it’s possible, and yes, it can be dangerous. Chimneys without a cap — or with a damaged one — are a common nesting spot for birds and squirrels, especially in spring. A nest sitting in the flue blocks the draft, which means smoke and carbon monoxide have nowhere to go but back into your living space when you light a fire. Beyond the safety issue, nesting material is also fuel sitting inside a flue that’s meant to carry heat and embers. If you hear movement in the chimney, don’t light a fire until it’s been inspected and cleared. A proper chimney cap solves the problem going forward.

What’s the difference between dryer vent cleaning and air duct cleaning?

They’re two completely different systems. Your dryer vent is the single dedicated exhaust line that runs from the back of the dryer straight outside — its only job is getting hot, lint-filled air out of the house. Air duct cleaning refers to your home’s separate HVAC supply and return duct system, the network that moves heated and cooled air throughout the house. Different systems, different equipment, different jobs. Sweeppy cleans dryer vents — we don’t service HVAC air ducts, so if a nest or blockage is in your home’s HVAC ductwork rather than the dryer exhaust line, you’ll want an HVAC/air duct specialist for that part.

Who is responsible for cleaning the dryer vent in a rental or apartment — landlord or tenant?

This comes down to your lease, not a fixed rule — dryer vent maintenance responsibility varies by rental agreement and isn’t something we can tell you a universal answer for. Some leases assign appliance and vent upkeep to the landlord or property manager as part of routine maintenance; others push it to the tenant. If you’re renting and noticing signs of a blocked vent (clothes taking longer to dry, a burning smell, visible lint at the outside vent hood), check your lease terms first, then raise it with your landlord or property manager if it falls on them.

Do you repair sagging or leaking gutters, or only clean them?

We clean gutters — from $99 depending on story height and footage — but sagging, separating, or actively leaking gutters are a repair issue, not a cleaning one. A clean is the right call when the problem is debris buildup; a repair or replacement is the right call when the hardware itself (hangers, seams, slope) has failed. If you’re not sure which you’re dealing with, we’ll tell you honestly when we’re out there rather than just cleaning around a problem that needs fixing.

Why are the bricks and mortar on my chimney crumbling, and how much does it cost to fix?

Crumbling or flaking brick and mortar — called spalling — is usually the result of water damage accumulating over time, not something that happens overnight. Water gets into the masonry, and repeated freeze/thaw or wet/dry cycles cause the surface to break down. This is a repair, separate from a routine sweep: depending on how far it’s progressed, the fix is either tuckpointing (repointing the mortar joints) or, in more advanced cases, a partial rebuild of the affected section. Cost depends entirely on the extent of the damage, which is why an in-person look is the only honest way to quote it.
